From the beginning, our clients wanted a house that would be integral with the landscape. We looked at several sites, settling on a 20+ acre parcel with a long north/south ridge opening to a bowl on the west and the south.
Exterior materials include stone, glass and wood. The New Hampshire granite arrived in 6x6x2 foot monoliths and was worked on site in a manner reminiscent of New England cemetery walls: large rough faced blocks with narrow chinking. Wide, rough-sawn red cedar boards clad the house, installed horizontally as clapboards with pronounced mitered corners.
The final house and landscape (by Stephen Stimson Associates) work in concert and are a testament to a remarkable owner’s vision and commitment.
