Estes House

In the summer, the house becomes a large screened porch. 3-1/2 foot overhangs to the south keep out the hot sun and the narrow plan allows cross ventilation in all rooms. In the winter, the low sun penetrates the house. Materials are old New England standards: locally sawn pine barnboard used as giant clapboards with corrugated steel barn roofing. Inside the structure is left exposed with exterior insulation. Careful planning and siting allow tropical-style living in a southern New England coastal zone.
