Two old stone breakwaters on the shore of this narrow site inspired the idea of two separate buildings running parallel with the lot. The house wing and the garage/studio wing create a sheltered southeast-facing courtyard for entertaining and gardening. At the front, both wings are anchored to a common facade of painted cedar boards. The house's breakwater form frames views of the water and makes the lot seem much wider than the actual 95'. And like the breakwaters, the arrangement provides shelter, in this case from winter winds and close neighbors to each side.
